English: Curriculum Principles

Our English curriculum focuses on developing knowledge and skills within the English National Curriculum. The aims of our English curriculum are to develop pupils’ technical language skills across reading, writing, spoken language and an appreciation and love of reading. We do this by using a wide range of diverse and inclusive texts, provide opportunities to write for a range of audiences and develop confidence in our pupils to express themselves with pride.

Pupils in our school are at different points in their learning journey therefore our curriculum is designed to focus on the development of key skills and knowledge, building on prior learning, appropriate to the individual learner.

The teaching of English across the key stages:

EYFS

Our focus is on developing early reading and writing skills through the accredited Read Write Inc. Programme. The EYFS framework for communication and language is also taught using a cross-curricular approach.

Year 1

Children are taught Phonics lessons through the accredited Read Write Inc. Programme which includes opportunities to practise reading.

Year 2 and KS2

Children are taught English lessons through the accredited Read Write Inc. Literacy and Language Programme. This includes opportunities to practise reading, writing and grammar through fiction and non-fiction texts.

KS3

At KS3, our English lessons aim to develop students’ mastery of language and literacy, ensuring they can communicate effectively and creatively. Through a blend of reading, writing, and spoken language activities, we focus on enhancing their ability to analyse texts, use language for effect, and write with accuracy and purpose.

KS4

KS4 pupils are taught English Language and English Literature as discrete subjects. English Literature lessons explore themes of morality, social responsibility, religion, and relationships through the study of classic and contemporary texts. In English Language, pupils refine their narrative style and argumentative voice. They also explore a wide range of themes and text types. Students also practise writing for various purposes and audiences, developing their ability to communicate effectively in different contexts.
